Troubleshooting Process for Sprinkler Malfunctions

Sprinkler malfunctions can lead to irrigation issues and cause your business to flood

Finding the cause of a problem with your irrigation system is extremely important. Irrigation issues inevitably lead to bigger issues, such as destroyed landscaping, or worse, flooding of your property. Once water gets built up in your landscaping it’ll also seep into your building which can not only destroy some of your office furniture, but inventory, files, and not to mention it’ll disrupt your day to day business. If enough water gets in, you may need to close down your business operations to customers during the time in which it takes to clear the water out and to restore your property.

When sprinklers malfunction, there are several steps you can go through to determine what the underlying cause may be. A number of things can cause irrigation issues. For instance, if some of the components are poor or worn out, you are likely to experience leaks. Perhaps there’s a rock blocking the water’s path, causing the system to have to work harder in order to get the flow to the sprinkler.

Determine Scope of Problem.

Is your whole system out, or is it just malfunctioning in one zone? If, for example, pressure is low in one zone, a pipe in that zone could be clogged. If, however, it is low everywhere, the problem is probably closer to the main source. Determining how large the problem is can help you narrow down the causes quickly.

Determine the Type of Problem:

Irrigation problems often tend to fall within two main categories. Hydraulic problems or electrical problems.

Hydraulic problems- are the result of an issue with the way the equipment works. So, if some of the components are poor or worn out it’ll cause the sprinklers to not work properly. There could also be a cut in a pipe, debris in the line or a technical problem with one or several of the sprinkler heads.

Electrical problems – are caused if the components are not getting the power, they need to operate it. Checking the timer or making sure that the irrigation system is fueled from a working outlet can be some of the first things you do when you suspect that the problem is electrical. It is not recommended to try and fix any electrical problem yourself. Should you notice the connection is not working and suspect the outlet is not working then contact an electrician.
